Golden Age Presbyterians (GAP)

Dear Members of Westminster:

If you, a family member, friend or neighbor have reached the magical age of 55, there are wonderful dividends. At age 55, there are AARP perks, of course, but another treat is available through First Presbyterian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church ---- eligibility for Golden Age Presbyterians (GAP). GAP is a group of people who appreciate good fellowship, good programs and good food. Contrary to our name, we are not all Presbyterians but welcome anyone who is “our age” and who would enjoy luncheon/programs and day trips or activities. GAP had its beginning in September 2006 and now has as many as 135 people attending themonthly (from September through May) luncheon /programs. Also, over the years, we have offered over 30 outside events and day trips.

GAP is not a dues paying organization. Anyone in the community age 55 & over is welcome at any of the monthly luncheon/programs and planned outside activities. The only charge is for the luncheon, currently $7.00; or the individual’s cost of the day trip or event. We meet in Alexander Hall at the First Presbyterian Church. Luncheons are 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the 3rd Tuesday (except for December which will be the 2nd Tuesday). This year lunch will be served at noon and the program will begin at 12:30 p.m. Hopefully, the new times will mean more folks who either work or take classes can join us. However, you must make reservations. If you are already on the GAP list from last year, you will be contacted. If you would like to be added or if you are not contacted by 9/15, please telephone Betty Williams (998-4474) or Carl Gardner (223-1472).

We’ll kick-off the 2010-2011 year on September 21 with Ron Bradford who will present a musical program. You might remember him as Tevye from last fall’s GCT production of “Fiddler on the Roof”. His day job is with Palmetto Christian Academy. The mission project for September is the Greenwood Community Theatre (a contributions basket will be in the hall). Mark your calendars & plan to join us.

Other programs tentatively planned are:
October 19 – Bettie Rose Horne “New Rules for Old Age”
November 16 – Jim Rossie & Chien (Hospice Dog)
December 14 – Greenwood High School Show Choir (with Gina Jolly)
January 18 – John Cesserich from Channel 4 “Weather Today”
February 15 – Jeromy Orthapeza or Kara Funke (singers/musical program)
March 15 – Kelley McWhorter (Tourism & the Chamber of Commerce)
April 19 – Choir (Soli Dei Gloria) Scholarship Students Concert
May – Emerald Bells (Handbell group)

Our confirmed 2010-2011 activities/events are dinner at Grits & Groceries, September 23; lunch at the Dillard House in Dillard, GA, October 14; tour of the Genetic Center, November 18; and, “A musical tribute to Frank Sinatra” matinee, December 9, at Newberry Opera House. Other events being considered are a visit to Edgefield-–visit National Wild Turkey Federation, Edgefield Pottery, and lunch at Edgefield Grill; trip to theBilly Graham Library in Charlotte; Ball Game in Greenville; tour of BMW in Greer; dinner theater shows; garden tours; etc. Look for sign-up sheets at the luncheons.

An extra event in September is a half day trip to Camp Fellowship for an afternoon at the 20th Annual Trinity Presbytery Over 50 Adult Retreat on Monday, September 27.  The theme is The Sermon on the Mount. Dr. Charles   Elliott will lead the worship and Dr. Robert Bryant is the Bible study leader. Cost is $7.50 for lunch. The deadline for reservations is September 17 — call Joyce/Dave Hyde at 223-1160.

Transportation to these activities, depending on numbers participating, generally is by church buses. We are looking for volunteers under age 70 (because of insurance requirements) to drive the church bus on one or two occasions for our day trips. For information, call Joyce or Dave Hyde at 223-1160.

Hope to see you in September.

  WPC Men's Basketball

Congratulations!!!

The men’s church basketball team finished the 2010 season with a strong run through the playoffs, finishing second to Real Life Ministries. Great job guys!!! Remember, “the first shall be last and the second shall be first.” Thanks also are extended to those from the church who came out to support the team. There was always a good cheering section and the team appreciated that. It was a good season and we look forward to the 2011 season. Go Blue!
